Gluttony, in Christian belief, is one of the seven deadly sins. Although considered as a warm, cozy and inconsiquential one, seeing the torment faced by the souls makes us think otherwise.
A common misconception towards Gluttony is that it is the act of using more than required. Contrary to popular belief, Gluttony is the act of excessive desire of something and using more than required instead of giving to those in need.
As Dante encounters a troubled soul, named Ciacco, Dante feels the plight of the tormented souls who have to face monstrous torture every day of eternity. Virgil assures Dante that Ciaccowill not rise again before the 'sound of the angelic trumpet'.
While Gluttony may not seem as deadly or a punishable sin, it indeed is. These are not hoarders who store materials from those in need. They simply have no control over their greed.
If one man uses up all the water in the world due to his excessive desire for it, it would have been man's greatest sin.
